If you've never been to Croatia, I can assure you that after you're done reading my sailing experience of the Adriatic, you're going to re-think your travel destination for next summer. We're going to start off with Crikvenica. It's a city situated on the Adriatic near Rijeka. Because of the climate the inhabits the Kvarner bay, Crikvenica is considered a natural health resort. It is especially suitable for older people looking for rehabilitation. My wife was very happy we chose Crikvenica as our next stop destination because we could finally set foot on land, having sailed for several hours. We rented a boat from a company that provides charter services. They are called SailingEurope and I would recommend them to anyone looking to rent a vessel in order to cruise freely around Croatia.
Crikvenica, together with Selce, is one of the most attractive parts of the Kvarner. The name originates from the word "crkva" or "crikva" which basically means "church". They weren't kidding when they were naming the town, since we saw a whole lot of old churches and monasteries. It felt like a trip back through time. We first set anchor inside the main harbor and continued our journey ahead by foot. It was a really nice day. Even on a hot day like this, we still managed to explore most of the town, but eventually gave up and decided it was better to cool off in the sea. Crikvenica has some of the nicest sand beach resorts I've ever seen. The water was clean and clear, really great for taking a swim. Because of the warm weather, the temperature was just right. We swam and soaked up the sun for hours.
Afterwards, we decided it was time for a nice meal. All this swimming really works up an appetite. We asked around and found out that there's a nearby village called Selce that has a really great fish restaurant called "Konoba Toc". We took a taxi service to Selce and arrived there rather quickly. The place was packing with tourists waiting for their table. After what seemed like an hour of waiting, we finally sat and ordered some famous Croatian fish delicacies. The food was delicious!
When we finished our meal it was still too early to hit the bed so we drove back to Crikvenica in a cab, and stayed there for a while longer. We had the pleasure of enjoying the rest of the night by dancing to the music of local street performers. It was very romantic and loads of fun.
There are plenty of things you can do in Croatia, but it's up to you to discover what you want to do while traveling across the Adriatic. Crikvenica is just one of many popular tourist destinations you're going to encounter on your visit to Croatia. Have fun exploring! Happy trails!
